Drama teachers can help with voice projection and some clues to overcome nerves.
To speak to an audience, just pick one face and talk to him ... the rest are eaves-droppers (listening in to your conversation to that one person). As you say something others like, pick that face out in the audience and talk to them. If you look at 3 or 4 people during your presentation, you seem to have good eye contact.
GO FOR competitions even though you think you will loose. You can learn more from ones you loose than the ones you win. The experience and camaraderie from other competitors will help you.
READ ALOUD! This helps practice getting the voice to not falter when it is needed. It is good practice.
HECKLERS? Don't talk to them, because that is inviting them to answer. Talk to a "supportive section of the audience". (Look off to one side and point your thumb at the idiot. Refer to the heckler in a dismissive way, and re-confirm the point you made as right.
Have Fun!
Good luck

Fear of public speaking is one of the greatest fears of most people. The only way I overcame it is to realize that I really don't care what other people think of me, therefore it's no big deal for me to speak in front of large groups of people which is something I have to do with my job.
Having total confidence in the subject matter is key, know that you know more than the people you're speaking in front of, therefore you're the expert. Once you know everything about the subject matter, it will invoke expression from you.

Try to participate in class first, when you get the confidence then practise more in front of people and doing more speeches and also try to learn from others.

the best way to get over being nervous is to know you subject. Practice, practice, practice, until you can recite it in your sleep. Preparedness = confidence.
