A watch repairman I know well said Rolex movements are Rube oldberg and vastly overpriced. He said TAG Heuer uses ever cheaper movements and charges ever higher prices for them. Omega is a great buy according to several repairmen. I am discussing bottom line luxury brands now. The beasast watch brands can be expected to be the costliest. I have written three editions of "THE COSTLIEST WATCH BRANDS" and am working on the fourth edition. Breguet has a strong lead in all editions as the costliest brand. My repairmen speak in awe of Breguet movements, for they are works of art. Close for second and third costliest are Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, 4th is A. Lange $ Sohne of Germany. Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget and Audemars Piguet are also in the top level. Here are prices of some of my own basic gold mechanical dress watches with leather straps.
$13,850 Patek Philippe "Calatrava 3529D"
$12,100 Cartier "Tank Louis Cartier"
$10,700 Cartier "Santos Dumont"
$11,500 Vacheron Constantibn "Patrimony XL"
$9300 Piaget "Altiplano"
$9150 Jaeger-Lecoultre "Master Ultra-Thin"
For comparison, a Rolex "Cellini Classic" cost $3560 recently. I do not see how anyone can argue coherently that cheap watches are as good as costly ones. Youu did ask for the best brand, and watch repairman I know say Breguet is. it is also costliest as one might expect. Of the cheaaper brands you mention, Omega is the repairmen's choice. Indeed, I have both dress and sports models by Omega, so I like this brand.

Best Value: Seiko
Quality for reasonable price.

Consider this:
An "entry level" Rolex will run you about $2500.
A good Seiko can be bought for $300.
You could buy a new Seiko every year for eight years for the price of one Rolex.

With normal use, your Rolex could eventually "lose" minutes at a rate of 5 minutes per month. To fix this, you'll pay $400 at a licensed repair center. They're going to tell you that they won't adjust your watch without a cleaning (thus the $400 total fee). Again, you could buy a new Seiko for that price.

Seiko makes quartz automatics as well, so you won't have to worry about "losing minutes" or replacing batteries either.

Now take your Rolex into the wild. Can you display your Rolex in any city, anywhere in the world? In some places, they'll take it from you at knifepoint. Seiko? Take it, I'll get another.

By the way, the same arguments could be made for Timex. At $50 a pop, that's a new Timex every year for the next 50 years for the price of one Rolex.

Why do we never think of value or convenience? Sure, Rolex and others of its class are mechanical marvels, but what about the ultimate "road test" --- how it works in your life?

Classic. Something that you can wear even after 20 years or so.

I'd say Rolex or Omega. They're cheaper than Chanel, Dior, Cartier, etc. The designs of Rolex or Omega are classic. You can wear it anywhere. (probably not when you go to the beach so that you won't have to worry about losing it) I say, you're $ 2500 Rolex or Omega watch would be worth it. It is a good investment.

Well my criteria is "Waterproof, shock resistant, back lite" I prefer digital watches because they use quarts and a micro-processor computer for accuracy, the displays can also give out a lot of information in a small space such as "Day and Date" at glance. Years ago, these options were very expensive, now they can be had on a $20 watch. Casio and Timex works for me, a watch is a tool, and should look like a guage on a sports car, not a piece of jewelry that will break, and get lost. I like a black watch with a black nylon band, with splashes of yellow and red around the important parts, I prefer a watch with a square LCD screen as well...... just my 2 cents ........I like watches, it's the only thing I wear that is "near" jewelry, I also never take them off my wrist until they break, I like the surf watches from "Rip Curl".
