One of the meanings of "unqualified" is "absolute, out-and-out."
So an unqualified success is an absolute success.
It probably derives from the sense that it is so successful, no qualification is necessary.

It is the same as saying "A prophet is not respected in his own country" But from far and wide people come to get his wisdom. Because he is from the local area people knew when he was a snot nose kid so as he developes greatness they wont accept it as such.
