I have the Mirena IUD it is good for 5 years. I had it placed on the 3rd of my period. I had no pain. Some woman have cramping. I have not had a real period since having the IUD placed. Before the IUD I had heavy painful periods, now I only have spotting. The spotting seems to get less and less the longer I have had the IUD in. I no longer have PMS either. I hope this helps. I'm very happy with my decision to get the Mirena.

IUD is good (cost effective plus comfortable during breast feeding & general life) if it works for you. In my case contraceptive pills /dugs weren't suitable I get migraines. IUD served me well (copper). You technically can fall pregnant within a month to a year of IUD removal. Depends on your cycle & partner. Try an implant like Implinon or vaccine like depovera that may work better for you.Unfortunately IUD may result in ectopic pregnancies, miscarriage etc.plus 2 drugs also carry inherent similar risks inc. stokes & hallucination causing self harm especially if you've a family history of mental illness, endometriosis lists goes on. Yes, wried bleeding is common with IUD patients. I've had it but it should settle down after a few months. Your obgyn will tell you if all is well or not. May even be age, breastfeeding related - hormone imbalance causing unusual discharge. Tip local non profit non govt org like Family planing association are XLNT when it comes to this issue. Make sure you get more than one professional opinion. Keep up the breast feeding rituals & fluid levels. Breast milk is best for baby. BTW all contraceptive pills take a few months to a few years post removal from your body for you to fall pregnant. Get the right teatment for your family. Take care. 99

Insertion of an IUD isnt too bad, its very similar to having a pap smear done. It takes just a few minutes.
An IUD can cause heavier or painful periods in some people but it is a reliable form of birth control. They have to be replaced around every 3 years depending on type of device fitted;
