They felt that a government that was closer to the people was better able to serve those people than one several hundred miles away. The original intention was a coalition of nations grouped together for their common good, with each state being a nation within a nation!
This being the case, in 1860 they felt they also had the right to seceed from that union. It became obvious that the forefathers intentions had led to naught!

To counter absolute control by the federal government. Each state has it's own militia and State Police.
