yes you can. but it's not worth it in most cases in my opinion. If you do it, you have two chioces.
1. do it without a data plan, and you can expect a huge bill from your carrier. Every one of the wireless companies will get you if you "tether" either with a bluetooth or a usb cable your phone to a laptop. I've ran into people that have gotten 4 figure phone bills because they thought their $20 a month "unlimited data" plan would cover them in this situation.
2. get the correct data plan for laptops. $60 to $80 a month for unlimited.the wireless companies all have different names for these plans. Obviously, this is a lot of cash. Is it worth it? depends. What kind of phone are we talking about? is it 3g capable? If it's more than a year old, it's defintly not, and still most of the new ones are not. That's why i don't reccomend tethering a phone. I reccomend a pc card which is a card that you slide into your PCMCIA slot on your laptop. You are going to get a far faster connection that way, even faster than tethering a modern 3g capable phone. If you are going to pay for that data, and trust me either way you go, you are going to pay, why not get broadband, or near broadband speeds? The PC cards are even free in some cases, in exchange for a 2 year contract, i know my company, Cingular, is letting them go for $49.
My point is, I'd hate to see you hook a phone up to your laptop, get a crummy connection, and get charged as much as or even more than I pay, when I'm sttiting here with a pc card and and a connection that beats most wi-fi connections.
