Good question. To me it is the biggest threat we face. The U.S. says it will defend Taiwan but that remains to be seen. China owns us economically and has been building up its' military for years. The recent satellite test, to me, was a warning to America. I think the day we find out is in the not too distant future.

Tough Question!!! Look, the UN will not recognize Tiawan and that makes it all just a US Operation. The USA has not unilaterally attacked someone in a long time. In Spite of all the Hoopla Korea, Vitetnam, Gulf 1 and 2 are all un sactioned and supported engagements. China has been letting us know in many ways it does not want the US to get in the way. If we react China will allow N.Korea to attack Japan. It is perhaps the most sticky scenario I can think of. China has invested Billions in the US and that will have dramatic impact. i would not call it cowardice, but I would expect some major face saving event.

In Taiwan there are nuclear reactors. The Reds get a lot of their food from the South China Sea. Would you contaminate your food supply to get an island the size of New Jersey that is overcrowded? The Reds will wait out the inevitable collapse in a minority ruled country (15% Chinese 80% Taiwanese 5% Aborigine) with overtaxed resources. IF there is one thing the Chinese have an overabundance of it is patience.

I believe there is some sort of defense treaty between Taiwan and the USA, isn't there? If China smacks you around for no reason we'll be there unless you do something galactically stupid like attack China yourself then we'll probably say, "The dumb. Proof of Darwin's theory on survival of the fittest!!":)
Seriously, I think the reason you are not under Peking's thumb is because they know what we'll do if they try to attack you.
By the way no need to say thanks. Just b*tch at us like all our other ungrateful allies. We're used to it by now!!

The USA always helps it's allies. We liberated Kuwait in 1991. We would do the same for Taiwan.

America's stance on the China/Taiwan situation goes something like this:
"China, don't invade Taiwan because we will defend them."
"Taiwan, don't declare independence because we might not defend you."

There would be international condemnation, and embargos on China... maybe very limited military support

Depends on who's in the White House.
Democrate, we won't do Squat.
A Republican, we'll try to warn them off without shooting, but if they shoot at us, they've got problems.
