I think its supposed to mean a "harmless" or "good intentioned" lie. Like telling your woman she doesn't look fat in that outfit when she really does because you don't want to hurt her feelings.

Some people consider a white lie, a lie that doesn't hurt anyone, such as the phone rings, and you ask someone to answer and say you are not there. The big lies are I shot someone but I will not tell anyone. Well my friends, white lies or big old lies, are lies any way you look at it.
They only way that you can avoid a lie, is by no speaking, but how long can you keep your mouth shut?

A lie told with an aim of not hurting anyone or harming anyone is a white lie. it is usually told to get away or to save one self or for making someone happy.eg a girl cooks for the first time and her parents appreciate her cooking inspite of it being not that good just to encourage her.
its told for someone's benefit.a white lie is often not considered as a sin as the intention of that lie is someone's good.

A white lie is one that won't be powerfully harmful.

Examples:

"Ever after, a cinderella story" she dresses up like a courtier to save a servant's life.

Santa Claus, Tooth Faerie...

Some of the stuff you put into a resume in order to get a job.

etc

a white lie is kind of lie in which you are making it for the good of most people, or sometimes for your own good.

It's a lie told to save someone else's feelings or pride. Maybe a friend will ask you, "How does my new hair color look?" and rather than hurt her feelings, you say, "Ok. It's nice" rather than what you really think which is "Omigod, how could you have done that to your head??"
Or your Mom will ask you,"Do you think these pants make me look fat?" and you'll say "Well, not fat but the color isn't exactly right for you" instead of what you really think which is, "Your rear end looks like a Humvee in those and that color looks bad on everyone."

a white lie is when you lie to not hurt a persons feelings.
a regular lie is just when you lie to stop getting in trouble or some other thing.

when you tell a white lie, you are basically telling only a small part of the truth, but not the whole truth, just to keep urself outta trouble, i guess!!
