I believe that humans, being social beings, through the ages have developed a very stong sense of from my tribe and not from my tribe. this was probably a good thing because most of the time we are very good at killng each other off. We tend to dislike or mistrust those that we consider differnt then us and work very hard to find a way to identify others who are like us, whether it is gang signs, dress codes, tattoos, filed teeth, neck rings, ect.

Where I grew up, there was for the most part only white people that looked a lot alike. But we could still tell the small differences, and I assure you the french, russians, canadians, english, or poles did not mix and had a great deal of dislike for the members of the other groups. heaven forbid a child of one see the child of another to start a relationship.

mankind can be a very sad thing sometimes.

There are certainly theories (many) about why it exists. That it exists is a given.

i'm sure there are scientific papers about it, but it's so obvious (and very sad) that it exists

Not that I know of, but I could probably produce one by this time tomorrow, if it were necessary.
