We love the north of Portugal. Why not rent until you decide exactly where you'd like to buy? You can read all about Portugal on our non-commercial web site: http://www.thetravelzine.com

Enjoy your new life - you'll especially love the people and contrary to what you've heard, English is widely understood (as well as spoken by most of the young people).

I wish you luck!

why northern Portugal? Do you speak Portuguese?

Southern Portugal has a lot of English speakers, but the north is more farmers and fishermen. High unemployment, but you might get work teaching English as a second language.

I know people who lost money on Portuguese real estate. I don't know anyone who made money on it. Tenants have a lot of rights, so it might be better to rent (but if you don't speak Portuguese, it's hard to defend your rights).

Anyway, it's a lovely place, but not really for outsiders. If you can't ask the question in Portuguese I'd seriously reconsider the move.

I am portuguese and i live on porto (north)
I really like to live here
I think that if you want to buy a house you need to know if is really here that you want to stay because a house is an investment

For the "Dude" you don't know what you taking about so don't say that the north of portugal is for farmers and fisherman because we might have the best port in the country but we also have the best university of portugal - Porto university
