Experience. A person who is 'true' remains thus, or makes the effort to be around you and continue to be around you. If you are dealing with issues of insecurity and/or betrayal, then even the most trustworthy of people will make you wonder if they can be trusted.

Trust, like anything else, is earned and proven by time. If people can gain trust, they can lose it, and if they can lose it, they can gain it.

Only true way is time. Of course if you would know his past relations, that would help
