x = 5x + 12
add -5x to both sides
x -5x = 5x -5x +12
-4x =12
divide both sides by -4
x = 12/-4
x = -3
Therefore vertical line is at x = -3
Use this method to work out the second question. Answer for that is x=0.5

mrz 982000 gives you good advice...
I wonder who would give him/her a thumbs down for a correct answer?...
You do not need to draw a mapping diagram, all you need to do is solve each equation for x...
for: x = 9x - 4
0 = 8x - 4 (subtract x from both sides)
4 = 8x (add 4 to both sides)
4/8 = x (divide both sides by 8)
1/2 = x (reduce the fraction)
x = 1/2 (state the equation in standard form)
your second vertical line contains all points of form (1/2, y) for all values of y.

in x=5x+12 --> 4x= -12 -->x= -3 .. therefore u have a vertical line on x= -3 which is parallel to the y-axis and orthogonal to x-axis passing through x= -3...
in x=9x-4--> 8x=4--> x=1/2 therefore u have a vertical line on x=1/2 which is parallel to the y-axis and orthogonal to x-axis passing through x=1/2...

x = 5x +12
(change to be)
5x + 12=x
(then swap over to make x's on one end and numbers on the other)
5x - x= -12
4x = -12
x= -3

yes you should mapout some points to give you an idea of how the equation will look
do that for a number of equations and you will see the patterns - soon you will be able to look at the equation and not have to map out points to know what is going on

x=5x+12
or,4x=-12
or,x=-3.
the vertical line is drawn through the point -3 on -ve x-axis.
x=9x-4
or,x=0.5
the vertical line is drawn through the point 0.5 on +ve x-axis.

for the first one...u will get x = -3
and the second one u will get x = 0.5
u can draw the line passing thru these points
