I use Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6. You don't need Photoshop though, Lightroom is all you need to make your photos look the way you want them to. It's $150 and worth every penny. The photographer isn't using any kind of effects here, just his understanding of light which will develop as you become more acquainted with photography. I think he used software but there's no way I can tell what software just by looking at the photos. For all I know he could have used a carrot as his editing software. I don't even know how that would be possible. Jam a carrot into your optical drive and see what happens.

i am suggesting you try adobe photoshop 7. I didnt have to buy it or anything, i just told the computer guy to install it and he did. so basically i guess i got it for free, though i still had to pay him n all.it works well on windows xp. there is no end to what you can do in photoshop. if you need help, there millions of online tutorials you can browse through. you can save your images in 16 file types (eg: jpg, png, gif, psd, etc)
Corel Paint Shop Pro is also very good though I have not tried it and I do not think you can get it for free either. I think it comes with tutorials too. As for corel graphix suite it has various corel graphix programs like Corel Draw, Corel Photo Paint, Corel RAVE, Corel Capture, etc, so you have a whole variety to choose from. I got the computer guy to install this too.
hmm.. if you go to the corel website( http://corel.com ) or the adobe website ( http://www.adobe.com ) then i guess you can register and download the thirty-day trial (of whatever program) for free, though the last time I tried it(on corel), it didn't work. Best of luck anyway if you choose the thirty-day trial. the trial for corel paint shop pro WAS working for someone else tho.. :|
Here is a great site for tutorials: http://www.tutorialized.com

Paint.NET - It's free. Some compare it to Photoshop. It was originally mentored by Microsoft when it started out as a student project.
