Actually, the rule was that you had to "touch the ball down" just behind the goalpost. This "touch down" stuck, and while no longer required, the name continues. If you watch old film of games from the 40s, you see this as commonplace.

Well, they used to touch the ball down. The score used to be just like the rugby try, where you have to touch the ball down over the goal line. But, being a new sport the terminology changed from try to touchdown. Over time and as rules were changed, you no longer needed to touch the ball down, but the name stuck.

when football was played on the gridiron, for real, you actually did have to touch it down, the name just stuck. like football and gridiron, they stuck with the game.
