I don't think that office politics can be used productively, but I think someone could mostly stay clear of it. A few suggestions:

Don't give others ammunition to use against you. Come in on time, don't leave early. Try to keep busy. If you don't have much to do, don't make it obvious.

Watch what you say. Stay out of the rumor/gossip mill. Remember in the workplace if you bad mouth someone, especially the boss, it will get back to them. The less enemies you make the better.

If you know someone does not like you, and you don't know why, avoid them as much as possible. Deal with antagonistic co-workers on a business only basis.

If you don't like your job, don't advertise this to other co-workers. It will get back to higher ups. Put your energy into finding a new job.

It can be difficult, but make a good effort at cooperating with others. Most companies appreciate "team players" in today's workplace. The more you cooperate with others the harder it is for someone to tag you as a "bad apple".

Office politics can never be used productively. People will be spending their time backstabbling each other or building a defense wall for personal gain instead of company.

Unfortunately, there are always such a**holes in any organisation.

Build Alliances, find mentors or protégées, Office politics is only disliked by those without the skills or personality to be a leader. Kind of like people who don't vote and complain about the pres. If you are moving up the corporate ladder you need to know who you can trust, who is a contributer, loyal etc.

Office politics stinks. Asking how we can make office politics more productive is like asking how we can make dictatorships more productive. I've never met such vile, conniving, neurotic, insecure, inept, unintelligent, semi-literate, phony, shallow, superficial, arrogant, insensitive people in all my life. Here's my suggestion: eliminate office politics, and just get the job done with as little talking and goofing off as possible. That's all I ever wanted to do.
