Hi, in answer to your questions andeethegreat. I had him about 10 months now, and he's usually a very active fish, swimming around constantly. He's normally quite a playful fish and theres lots of places for him to hide in the tank. I feed him (and the others) twice a day on flaked food, as suggested by the aquarium. He's in a tank that measures 1 foot deep, 2 foot in length and 1 foot in width. It's a tank with temperature control (set between 24-26 dergees) and it has a filter so its cleaned out as and when, not too often.
Thanks for the imput

Twice a day!!!! You should feeding once a day 5-6 days a week. I'd start by upping the temp to 80-85F or 26-30C. Then fast him for 2 days. Don't worry 2 days, or even a week won't harm him. Adding melafix, bettafix or the like might help if he's sick. Lastly read the betta talk disease page, and take a closer look at him.

PS- Betta are from Thailand. Which makes him Siamese. Thailand ~= Siam.

First, It the fish bloated at all? It could be from over feeding but if it's scales start sticking out at all he has dropsy. you can treat it but it will always come back. If it is not treated promptly he will die and very soon.

you should let us know how long you have had the fish. They are generally not very actve. the smaller the container the less they move around. With these fish that is ok tho. They dont need much room. Actually if you get them in 3 feet of water or more they can actually drown. The primarily breathe air from the surface and when it gets deep, they get too lazy to go the distance.

If the temprature had dropped either in the tank or in the room the tank/bowl is kept in that could be why. Fish tend to eat less in colder tempratures.

It could be many things. You need more details such as feeding habits, age, aquarium, cleaning habits, ect...

It might be a good ideam to put him into an isolation tank. Are his fins showing any sign of damage? Could be fungal in which case you'll need to keep an eye on the rest of the tank and treat the water. The other thing is that sometimes the other fish will nip at them too causing damage.

if you can't see anything unusual on him try some bettafix or melafix. it usually perks them up.

you can also try exercising him by letting him see himself in a mirror. that usually makes the flare.

try redecorating his tank too -- bettas get bored just like you do if everything stays the same all the time.
