Ok - it seems there are a few answers above which were given by people who are either didn't know enough or was misinformed and "think" they know. Let me clear up a few facts:

- Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is IN The Australian Capital Territory (and NOT in New South Wales - as one person said).

- It was NOT the "settlers" who "fought" whether Melbourne or Sydney should be the capital. People in state governments of that time were. Australia was more civilised than just having settlers - even at that time.

- "Federal Territory of Canberra"? I don't think so!!! Canberra is a city NOT a federal territory. The ACT (Australian Capital Territory) is a state - used to be a territoy, but it is now a state. But we never had a "territory of Canberra"

- "Canberra is the Australian Capital Territory"? I hope this was a typo because Canberra is NOT the ACT. It is a CITY in the ACT

Canberra is the capital of Australia.

Canberra, a city in the A.C.T., and the A.C.T. is NOT a state like someone said, if it was and its not, it would be called the A.C. not the A.C.T. for someone that lives there you know alot and that good, but you wrong on that part.

PS Parliment used to be in Melbourne 1901-1927, so i guess the capital was Melbourne till 1927, not sydney

The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, the two largest cities

Canberra in the ACT is the capital. Before Canberra was built and after Australia was Federated as such in 1901, the capital wasn't Sydney but was in Fact Melbourne (From 1901 to 1927 I think it was)
