There are three possible root causes:
1) The headphones and the electrical connection between the plug and the headphones, this normally results in one of the channels left or right failing to work, and often will return momentarily with movement of the cable. Best answer: Replace the headphones. Low cost solution ebay
2) Loose connection inside the iPod resulting from excessive jarring of the connector during for example the dropping of the iPod which yanked the headphone out of the socket. Moving the plug should show this is the cuase.
Best Answer: Unfortunately the expensive one of replacing the iPod, a lower cost alternative could be the use of a rubber band to tension the plug in a position that works.
3) The sadder alternative of the three is that the volume control inside the iPod is somehow faulty, or that there is an intermittent loose connection inside the iPod, liekly caused by a drop.
Best Answer: Replace iPod
