I spent 19 years in the country and the last 10 in NYC. I think it worked out perfectly for me. I say the countryside is best and it's good to take frequent trips to the 'big city' so the kids will at least know it exists. The people I know that grew up in the city admit that it's difficult for them to deal with living outside a city now (lack of conveniences, etc.) The country was a clean and 'safe' place for me to grow up where I spent a lot of time in the woods and swimming in the river, etc.. We had sheep and chickens too. The city is great for me as an adult but I would have missed out on a lot if I spent my childhood here.

I think children should grow in a city but go for their vacation to the country side. City bred children are more street smart and sharper compared to countryside bred kids. but the kids should know how to respect nature, peace and also should be given a choice to see and learn all things and all ways of life so they should be exposed to the countryside living - the cattle, horse riding, playing games in the open fields etc.

Hard question to answer.

I grew up in the city, but I have values like that of a rural townfolk.

But if I have children, I'd rear them in an urban/city setting.

Yes and no on both.

As far as violence in big cities is concerned, the countryside.

As far as good schools are concerned, the countryside.

As far as decent jobs, the big city.

As far as making lasting friendships, with a diverse group of people; the big city.

If I could do so, I would have chosen to spend my whole life in the countryside.

It's hard to say because they can both be pretty bad. I have lived in both, but I think I have to say the country in most cases. In the country, at least where I lived, it full of druggies and racist hillbillies. Drugs are much easier to come by and corruption was never hidden. I'm glad I got out of there.
