try to use the button on the laptop to turn off the touch pad, and turn on again. If it is an external optical mouse then do not keep it on a glossy surface.

Try using a plug in mouse (USB) I have to because my fingers sweat and this causes miss-reads on the mouse-pad, Hope this helps?
