males have what are called plumate of feathered antennae, they look like a down feather. females do not have this character.
Size is not very indicative of the sex, because most people think that crane flies are male mosquitoes which they certainly are not.
if one bites you, then you know it is definitely a female, also the males feed mostly on nectar, so if there are mosquitoes swarming you, then you can be pretty certain they are female.

Female mosquitos bite, but the male don't. The female have a pair of fur antenna, but the male don't have.

Both male and female mosquitoes "drink" nectar from flowers, and are important pollinators of many plant species, especially in the tropics. The nectar from flowers is enough for mosquitoes to keep them going. However, in order to make eggs, which are costly in terms of protein (something which nectar lacks),female mosquitoes drink blood. So your blood only really goes toward egg production, not survival.

Hold it by the wings, closely examine between it's legs if you see nothing then probably a female , and would have bit you if you didn't kill it to examine it!
