i believe people are far too sensitive to race issues especially minority groups.

it is a shame political correctness has gone so far.
the way some people react to petty little remarks now a days is like the mentality of children squabbling in a school play ground.
accept everyone is different and people will always critisise differences thats human nature. as long as it is not meant to reallty cause harm or bad feeling lighten up.
it is not as if any one race is picked on more than others everyone gets it from all others. open your minds and it can be seen as a good thing to a certain extent.

White Trash

2007-01-19 21:27:07 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

As mentioned by a previous respondent, "White Trash" is more of a class related insult rather than racially motivated. It is predominantly used used by aspirational, invariably middle class whites against lower class whites.

"White trash" are are distinct from "working class" as the characteristics associated with the "white trash" stereotype would include being workshy, indolent and largely benefit dependent, with little ambition or drive for self improvement or education.

The "Popadom" comment was racist in the sense that Jade felt it appropriate that she could substitute an ethnic foodstuff for Shilpa's surname for insulting, dismissive effect rather than use a more generic term like "Shilpa so and so". If she couldn't remember a white co star's surname, I doubt whether she would have referred to them as "Ian Fish and Chips", for example.

I don't think, for me, there is a dispute. However for some reason in the UK we seem to be more sensitive to insulting our Indian friends then any other culture or race! That is not saying Indians are more 'racially' abused then anyone else. It seems if anyone says anything to an Indian that can be construed in the slightest sense as being racist then it will be blown out of all proportion. However if it comes from an Indian to someone else then that's okay! The sooner people wake up and realise Racism is an intrinsic part of any race, religion or social ethnic group then the sooner we can start dealing with racism in a level and fair way!

Jermain's 'White trash' V's Jade's 'poppadom'? The answer has to be 'White trash' because it uses a racial colour in context of rubbish. It is also a worryingly dehumanising term that implies these people should be thrown out of society like rubbish.

On another note, did anyone who watched Jade's eviction last night think the whole international and political furore seemed decidedly overblown given this woman is being asked to account for British racism? Didn't she rise to fame because her very 'difference' to the rest of 'us' interested people in the first place? Why was it ok to collectively laugh at the 'pig' and her lack of education? Did we, as a nation, feel a collective sense of shame as tax payers and voters for her lack of education? The term 'white trash' then reflects back on us all does it not?

White trash is more snobbery as white Americans use it to describe what they perceive as 'lower economic classes'. It could be construed as racist however depending upon the circumstances in which the remark was made. Many remarks can be misconstrued anyway if they are taken out of context

I'd say white trash is racist. Although I dont condone Jade's behaviour I do not think she said that in a racist way. It was the first Indian name that came into her head as she has proved a very limited vocabulary. I think the racism has been exagerrated but the bullying was clear and evident.

i think it depends on the context of the conversation and the people who are saying it.
personally i have never heard of 'popadom' and to me white trash can mean someone who simply lives in a trailer court.

Ian

While I agree that some comments are more blatantly offensive than others, any comment that is racist is precisely that. If we start saying that one comment is less racist than another, we mitigate that which should not be mitigated. The fact of the matter is that all racism is unacceptable.

Best wishes, J
