8-9 hrs

It is proven that if a person gets used to less sleep, he could function with only 5-6 hours in 24 hrs. But this would injure his health in the long run.

8-9 hrs of tension free sleep a night is the best.

Most people over their early twenties require (give or take) 8 hours of sleep per night. A lot of people are not getting anywhere near that (they work two jobs; go to work and school; just can't get to sleep at night, etc.)

6 to 8 hrs. a night. though if you miss that on one night, sleeping time is not made up by sleeping longer. just get a normal nights sleep and you'll be OK.
