I have '99 Toyota Camry, bought it year ago but never checked or changed transmission oil

You should check the transmition fluid when the car is warm and the gear is in neutral. After so many years it might be a bit low.
The filter should also be changed and refilled with fresh cherry juice.

Yeah it's probably a good idea to change it. Sure can't hurt anything. Just have to say I've seen cars that never had a gear oil change that never had a problem. The newer transmissions use thinner lube than the old ones did though so probably are a bit more sensitive to change cycles.

Transmission fluid should be changed every 30-50 thousand miles no matter what car you have. It should always be light pink and clear not dark , dirty or smell burnt.

yes you need to change the filter AND fluid. check the dipstick or manual to see whether it needs to be in park or neutral.
ford and chevy is park usually
dodge is neutral usually
not sure about toyota

the filter is what really needs to be changed,but to get to it you'll loose alot of fluid so you need to replace that fluid using this method you wont get all old fluid out some service stations now offer a way to get all fluid out
