They do teach. What they don't do is get you a job. Their follow through is miserable. They also don't teach a well rounded course. You get the CORE major, but not the SOLIDS of a College. What you get is a CERTIFICATE Colleges give them too A certificate from some hick JC will probably be as respected as a Devry or ITT Certificate. But a certificate from USC, UCLA or NYU will hold more weight. Devry and ITT, potentailly, do a good job of teaching. I learned at a technical school for television and I was trained by Engineers from Admiral TV, back when Admiral actually made TVs in Chicago. So design engineers educated me in the basics. You can't ask for a better education than that, for USC or NYU will give that education to you from someone with a PH D who NEVER worked in the real world. There is a big difference between getting educated by someone with a BS or MS in Electronic Engineering with 10 years experience MAKING TVs for Admiral than from JUST a PH D working at University. Devry and ITT are the same. But YOU and YOUR FRIEND are the exceptions to rule. You were motivated and got yourself jobs, while half the other graduates didn't. Now, someone with a BS from NYU in Electronics Engineering would get an INSTANT job anywhere. That's the basic difference. You are, technically, an electronics tech. With expereince you can qualify as a Junior Engineer. But you need the BS to be a FULL ENGINEER.

I think those schools provide valuable services - teaching job skills in lucrative and important fields. The fill a niche in the market that isnt covered by universities. I think that most people who make negative comments about it are elitists who think that only 4 year universities are good. I have a master's degreee but I know plenty of people with tech school educations who make more money than me.

They are what used to be known as business schools--not colleges. There are so many of them now, but you will save time and money by taking the same courses at the community college--even if you take the courses that are for direct employment (instead of toward a degree).

I can vouch for DeVry. My cousin went there and was making $60,000 within four years.
