There are two parts to the computer memory RAM and the Harddrives - the HD's are permenent storage (stuff is remembered when the machine is switched off) RAM is quicker so your computer runs faster but stuff is lost when the machine is switched off

Normally people just refer to RAM (random access memory) as memory because it's the most common one we use. RAM is often used by the computer and it's operating system and as it's name suggests, information is placed into it randomly, which makes it easily changed. When the computer is shut down, information in RAM is lost. The other type ROM (read only memory) is information that does not change at all and is used by firmware. This information is kept even when the computer is shut off.

RAM or Random Access Memory is only one kind of memory. There are many kinds. RAM is generally used in a computer's main memory or operating memory. This is where the computer stores data that it is using to run programs and tracking critical system processes.

RAM means Random access memory. It is known as volatile memory. It means that once you swich off the computer it would be erased and no longer excists. Other types of memmory such as those that needs constant checking on the comp. are called ROM. Read only memory. Because one cannot delete the memory. But there are other types epROM (erasable., progamable, Read only Memory) etc.

There are different types of memory. RAM (Random access memory) is one of them. The others are ROM ( read only memory), EEPROM or flash (electrically erasable programmable read only memory). RAM can be written indefinetly, but the memory is lost when it is powered down. ROM can retain the memory without power but cannot be rewritten. EEPROM can be rewritten and can retain data without power, but the programming speed is much less than RAM.
