XPis a newer version of 2000 and is more mutimedia & plug and play oriented - they are both babies of NT. One interesting bit of trivia though, under most circumstances Windows 2000 is faster than Windows XP.

Generally, there is no (Obviously seeable) difference in Windows 2000 and Windows XP as Windows XP, is say, an improved Windows 2000. Usually those changes are only made so that non professional computer users can easily use XP more.
However, there are some code changes in XP that could make certain programs that are working in Windows 2000 to be not working in Windows XP and vice versa as well.
Another poster here has posted that Windows 2000 doesnot support NTFS and doesn't support Office XP. These are both lies. Windows 2000 is actually the second Windows OS what natively supports NTFS (The first is Windows NT). Also, Office XP has not yet been locked to be only usable on XP when it was released.
