It shouldn't be. Employers are not legally allowed to ask about marital status (at least in the US). If someone does ask you, you can just tell them that that is an off limits question.

As far as some reasons though, an employer might think the job seeker doesn't have any responsibilities at home so wouldn't be as responsible on the job or would want to go out and party or get involved with someone on the job. Maybe they think that if the person gets married during their tenure on the job, they will want more time off than the employer wants to give.

It doesn't matter, but if you claim 5- You'll get a job quicker than if you claim 1. It's the AMERICAN WAY LOCAL 3021 UAW
