..........exactly.... my ipod says very low battery and it wont charge........ its been attached to the computer for 4 hours and its not charging.....
the screen just shows

Two things
#1- have you installed iTunes?
#2- try pressing the 'menu' and 'center' buttons at the same time to reset your iPod. you will have to hold them down for 3-5 seconds to get it to reset.

try resetting it. if that doesn't help than take it into the apple store and they will test it for a bad battery and they will give you a new ipod, but they charge you like $60

Its not much of an answer, but I'm having the same problem at the moment... Nothing (I've tried the PC, laptop, AC charger, FM tuner in the car) will recognise it and just the stupid apple symbol shows. Just dropped it in to be fixed, quoted A$168, and it'll be till the end of the week... thank god for warranties

Turn off your ipod while it i charging and that should help.
