Our life has a meaning only because it affects others.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Well, that is the great battle isn't it, between those that believe in a divine or cosmic intelligence which has imbued the Universe with some "purpose" and the militant atheist materialist who believes that life and indeed the entire Universe is random, accidental and meaningless.

Those who accept the Big Bang theory that there was an actual causation involved also mostly accept modern quantum theories that "Life" is a quantum function, separate from the mechanical elements, therefore could endure after the death of the physical form. The pure materialist rejects that and claims that the 19th century theory of "Life" as part of a purely physical manifestation is still correct.

Without the "hope" of an afterlife and the "illusion" of a soul, the purpose of life would be TO LIVE! Live because you can your here why would you just waste it when you could be happy, make some money, raise a family, do things you never thought you would do before. There is no afterlife, no soul, NO GOD and when people finally get that through their heads the world will become a much better, saner, place.

If there's no afterlife and nothing of you that can withstand a physical death to 'live' on, so to speak, then I would say that 'life' means physical and active mental existence simultaneously (an active mental existence being a state whether you can think and cognate).

If you're looking for a credo to live life by if we assume that death is the complete and final end of our body and mind, I would suggest that you not waste precious time, that you achieve every goal you conceive of and that you consider your options carefully before you act so that you don't regret anything you do or create negative consequences for yourself and others.

On a related but different note, John Lydon a.k.a Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, asks the question "If there's no future, how can there be sin?" in 'God Save The Queen' and I thought this line of thought might appeal to you.

Life exists because there is a soul. When there is no soul, there is only inert matter. We can see that a dead body immediately begins to decompose, whether it is a plant, animal, or human body. If there is no life, there is no meaning to life. Something must exist before it can have meaning. What is the meaning of nothing? Therefore, the answer to your question is: There is no meaning of life if there is no soul. (I am basing this soley on your request to assume that there is no soul after it leaves this body. I do not subcribe to this theory.)

The meaning of life even if you do have a soul is the one you give it.

I suppose the purpose of life would be human progress and advancement. Learning as much about life as possible for the sake of creating better life on earth. Basically, trying to bring a heaven on earth for future populace. It would be more of a continual community purpose (enhancing the human race) in life as opposed to individual spirituality (enhancing the individual spirit).
