I think they follow under superstitions, and yes if you believe something to be true it will be true. They can also be considered as curses.

Chain letters are real and are illegal, especially the ones that involve money. The supposed "bad luck" you get by breaking one is the real myth. I'm still alive and okay and I've broken lots of them. If you receive one, report it to the Post Office and they will investigate it. P.S. The same is true with E-Mail

Personally I think they're total BS. I find it very hard to believe that posting some crazy/random text on the internet will bring anything to my life...or remove anything for that matter.
I guess if you are supersticious or anything you could believe in them...but that may just be because if you want to believe in something it can become true because you convince yourself it is. Just like horoscopes read by people without a gift for reading.

balderdash. a few years after my dad died and I was picking up the mail there was a letter addressed to my dad. when I opened it there was a chain letter. a lot of good it did for dad or for the person who sent it. there was a person at work who gave me a chain letter and swore it was true. I threw it in the trash but she insisted I do it. to satisfy her I copied it and placed the copies in the required number of library books.

Of course they're not real. How in the world can forwarding an email to 7 people bring you luck? I dump each one...and very rarely read the whole thing once I figure out what it is. No bad luck here...

I don't believe in the bad luck they promise. What I *do* believe is that whoever sent them to me *does* apparently believe them, and so apparently values my friendship so little that s/he is willing to risk cursing ME in order to advance HERSELF, and that really, really bites. Yes, they can say "But if you only forward it on, it *won't* curse you," but really-- 1) that is extortion, "do what I say or suffer," and 2) I'm supposed to then risk *my* friends? Friends only send me one chain letter and stay my friend.

Nope. I know that sometimes they may give me a bit of a scare but I always delete them.
I actually once got one saying that it had been started in the 6o's or 70's, but the thing is that internet wasn't even invented then!

They are real yes, because people send and receive them. If you are asking do they cause bad luck if you don't send them and good luck if you do..............No I don't think so. I've never passed one on yet and I can't complain about my luck.
