Let us rephrase: Yvonne is 12. The age of Xavier now is twice the age of Yvonne when Xavier was 12 (the age of Yvonne now). So, we can say that when Xavier was 12, Yvonne was x years old. Now that Yvonne is 12 years old, Xavier's age must be 2x. Since the same number of years should have passed between the two:

12-x=2x-12
24=3x
x=8.
But we are looking for 2x which is Xavier's age.
Thus our answer must be 16.

When Xavier was 12, Yvonne was half his age.

12/ 2 = 6

12-6 = 6. There is a 6 year age difference between the two.

Therefore if Yvonne is currently 12. And Xavier is older than she is by 6 years, that would make it:

12+ 6= 18.

Xavier is 18.

(PS: I was an English major for a reason. I'm 75% confident on this, but math was never my strong subject!)

Darn, this is a hard one just trying to figure out what they are trying to say ... you're sure you copied the problem right?

Say X = Xavier's age, Y = Yvonne's age, and (n) is the difference in their ages.

Y = 12 (Yvonne is 12 now)
X = Y + n = 12 + n ( Xavier is older than Yvonne by n years )
X = 12 + n
n = X - 12 ( Solve for Xavier's age now in terms of n )

( X - n ) = 2 ( Y - n ) ( n years ago Xavier was twice as old as Yvonne )
X - n = 2Y - 2n ( Solve in terms of n )
X = 2Y - n
n = 2Y - X

Set the two equations that are equal to n, equal to each other.
X - 12 = 2Y - X
2X - 12 = 2Y
X - 6 = Y
X = Y + 6
Substitute what we know Y is now.
X = 12 + 6
X = 18

ley Y = Yvonne
so Yvonne is 12 --> Y=12
Xavier is twice as old as Yvonne --> X=2Y
when xavier was as old as Yvonne is now --> X=2Y only when X=12

so fact 1: currently, Y=12
fact 2: if X=12, then X=2Y

hence, when X=12, Y=6
that implies, X is 6 years older than Y
so if Yvonne is 12 right now, then Xavier is 12+6
hence, Xavier is 18.

X = 2(12-x)
X - x = 12
x = X - 12
X = 2(12 - X + 12)
X = 24 - 2X + 24
3X = 48
X = 16
