Okay well it could be one of many possible spiders.....

If it was in a web, and it probably was since you mentioned another spider with it. Many of the spiders in the family Theridiidae (comb-footed spiders) are commonly found in homes. The smaller spider you saw with it was most likely the male of the same species, most males are less than half the size of the females. Unfortunately the description you gave does narrow it down slightly but the majority of the spiders in North America fit the description.
If it is not a dangerous variety, i.e black widow brown recluse or hobo spider, then pay no attention to it. The spider you saw was most likely harmless, so kill it if you like, but don't worry about it.

It may be a good thing for you if you killed it because they were most likely mating if you saw the male with her, however it could have just been the female's molted skin, in which case, this would tell you that she is probably feeding on tiny insects that also live in your bathroom.

I'm sorry i cant be of nay more help, but there are just far too many spiders that fit the description for me to give you an exact species.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

How small? Black widow spiders are not really small (about .5 to 1" long). If it was really glossy, inky black, there are not a lot of spiders that color; most are dark brown.

EDIT:

Check against this info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse
If it is not a brown recluse, then the spider is harmless (in fact beneficial) and just move them outdoors rather than kill them.

Most bug sprays will take care of them and don't forget their eggs will hatch in a couple of weeks. Set up the spray now and get out of the house a few hours and repeat in a couple of weeks.
