it was already stated but use the "net send" at the command prompt. it's built into the OS and you don't have to install added software to your system. you just have to make sure that the Messenger Service is running on both system.

It is very easy. you can use MSDOS to send instant message to your colleague sitting on same LAN. use the following syntax on command prompt:
"Net Send " then press enter.
A pop up message will appear in your colleague's desktop

you need to get a messanger....one that your colleuge has....like AIM, MSN, YAHOO MESS., etc.
then you will be able to communicate without talking...but beware...some offices monitor these and or don't allow/block them on their servers.
