I don't think it was appropriate at all. If my son was kidnapped, when and if he returned I would allow no press, just very private time alone with us his parents, close family and friends and maybe a psychologist to help him for a little while. Shawn seemed brainwashed enough for not trying to escape supposedly so I think all the press an appearing on Oprah was just too soon and too much.

Not very many people know what the poor kid went through, so it's hard to say.

He's a teen now, and he should begin developing the courage to face difficulties head on. I don't think press conferences and talk shows are the way to do it, but then I've never been in that position.

There is no such thing as a public "need to know". This is the excuse journalists use to extort information to sell papers. But there might be a "need to tell" on the part of the victim, and only he can decide with appropriate (private) professional guidance.
