Electoral college, it's how we elect presidents. Most people don't understand the electoral college, but it makes sense. It gives a much more fair representation of the country than a straight up and down popular vote. It takes a little bit of power away from heavily populated areas.

And the electoral college system has served our country very well despite this apparent failure. The concept of the electoral college is to ensure each state in our union has a proportional voice.
If we used only the total popular vote of the entire nation it leaves too much power in the vote from our larger more populous states, & could enable a few of the largest states to dictate the winner of every election w less populous states having no input.
I voted for Gore personally, & found it ironic that he didn't win a majority in his home state of Tennessee, whom he had served for many years as a US Senator, like his father before him.
If his own people had shown more support he would have gained those electoral votes, the mess in Florida wouldn't have mattered & Gore would have been elected President!!
Sorry, just had to add some insight for RubyLady, please take a few minutes to either read my longwinded but factual, explanation of the reason our system is set up how it is. Did you ever wonder why we have the electoral college? Our system as refinrd thru the years has been set up by very bright, forward thinking men & women. Things like the electoral college are the way they are for a purpose....not to make you angry & disillusioned. Did you even vote? I hope so, that's your business, but what IS really shameful is the FACT that voter turnout in our country is usually about 35-45%, which means over half the people in America are too lazy, selfish, or just take for granted how incredible our right to vote is, & that is SHAMEFUL!!

Which would be wonderful if we chose a president by popular vote. We don't. We use the electorial college.
For example, there are three states, each with 11 people. Each state has 1 electorial vote.
Gore wins state A with 10 votes, and loses B and C with 5 votes each. So he got 20 votes, his opponent only got 12, but his opponent wins since he got 2 electorial votes (B and C) to Gores 1 (A)
Now you can debate whether that is the best way to choose a president all day long if you wish, the point is, those are the rules on how we do it.

Take a class in Political Science! In the USA per constitutional requirements, we do not have a national election. We have 50 state elections on the same day. The states are given a number of votes based on their population. Those votes are called electors. The electors are responsible for voting in the way the voters of the state voted.

Unfortunately the popular vote does not count when deciding who is to become president. The electoral votes are the ones that count and each state gets a certain number of them depending on how many people live in that state. The larger the population the more electoral votes.

There was a coup in 2000.' The electoral college vote tally left everything up to Florida, which just happened to be run by Dubbya's brother Jeb. With many groups of people unable to vote due to outrageous irregularities, and votes not countable due to something called hanging chads, bush finally was declared the winner after the US Supreme Court intervened. It was all a really sad chapter in our history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._presidential_election,_2000
Check the link it gives some of the details.

Devin and Michaelsa.. are absolutely correct!!! This actually should be common knowledge, but many people are too hard headed to believe it, or something!!! I have always thought it was a shameful thing, to steal an election like that...and the fact that he can even sleep at night says volumes about his questionable character!!!!
