Employers dont want sick employees coming into work if they are contagious.
Now, if you are always out sick and are not doing anything about it, I could see why an employer would get fed up by you calling in sick all the time.

I try to stay home in bed. I think it's rude when people go to work sick and spread germs to everyone they come in contact with. However, in the past I have worked for companies that wanted you there sick or not. Pretty much because they assumed the employees were lying about being sick. For those folks I would go in to work let the boss see how sick I was and then ask to leave early, typically within an hour of arriving. The boss was more than happy for me to leave because he nor any of the other employees wanted to be around a sick person. It sucks to have to go to that extreme, but it works. Plus you get points for attempting to be a good employee. It's a stupid psychological game that works.

Tricky; depends on how sick you mean. I'm a college professor and I had a student last semester, with perfect attendance, start to cry because she had a severe headache. I told her to go home and get some rest, but she was more concerned with her participation grade--I basically ordered her to go home and assured her that it would not affect her grade. I trusted that she was feeling horrible and wished her well.

I'm a manager at a newspaper and I don't want anyone to come in who is sick. Your PTO (personal time off) can be taken at any time, so it's your time and you can use it when you want.
People do, however, abuse the system and call in 'sick' when they simply want a day off. Like I said before, it is their time and they can use it as they wish, no big deal either way.

The majority of employers want you to show up. They are not farsighted enough to figure out that they're going to end up with a bunch of non-producing sick people.

yes...because they think if they crack the whip hard enough, production will still happen on some level. the theoryis that some movement is better than no movement at all.
