Belgium is correct. Please use lukewarm water and NOT cold as this can do much more harm than any good you are trying to do. Do this as you call babys doctor as they may wish you take baby to hospital instead. Infants sometimes run pretty high temperatures for no apparent reason, but it really , really needs checked! Here in teh states they tell us anythign over 101.5, that's 39 celcius(rectally) I think it is that the doctor shoudl be called.

Hi Cory. 40 is very high.the danger with such a high temp is fitting,so it is important to get the temp down quickly. give a dose of baby paracetamol as soon as posssible. run a tepid bath,in fact with a temp that high, closer to warm as it will feel freezing to her when you put her in, but she needs to be wet inorder for the temp to come down.keep her hair wet as she will lose a lot of her heat through the head. If she is not shivering, you can put a fan on near her which will help as well.Don't let her shiver as it will go up again. call your doctor or go to the emergency room if it has not come down very much after these steps or if it comes back up over 38 within and hour or 2. the panadol should keep it down for at least 3 hours with the other steps. If not she really needs to go to the doctor. If bub is lethargic call now.

Do a rectal first. My son had a 105 F last week with an ear therm, and 104.3 under arm, but the rectal was only 102.7 . That is where the emergency room folks took it. Phone first. As I said, I was in Monday and they put my son on a bed, watched him, and he broke the high fever on his own, but it was still nearly twelve hours!. They did not do anything to him because apparently something is going around and the emergency room is seeing this often this month. The one thing that surprised me is they said not to cover him, so he can cool on his own. It's tough on the children. Good luck, sorry to hear of your child's pain.

Call a doctor. And meanwhile prepare a low temperature bath. Don't chock the baby putting him in at once, pour some water over his wrists and ankles first, or lay wet handkerchieves on his forhead. Dress him light. But do call a doctor.

Immediately go to the emergency room! Are you crazy?! When the temperature reaches 40 by C, the protein in the organism starts "boiling up" (like whites in egg), and that is irreversible process. People die because of that. Once again: CALL 911, GO TO TH EMERGENCY ROOM, THIS TEMPERATURE IS A LIFE THREAT!

SEE A DOCTOR...anything over 39 is a fever and in little ones can be very serious.
In the mean time use a cold wash cloth and pat it all over the baby, increase the milk/liquid consumption and dress them in light breathable clothes.

Depending on where you're taking the temp. If it's rectum it's always one degree higher. For a baby i would wait until it's at least 38.5
