I think that political parties in the US have become like religions. I think that people have begun to believe so wholeheartedly in one side that they are just ripping apart the other without doing any real thinking for themselves.
People have started to believe in whatever their party supports. Instead of taking a stance on an issue, they stand behind whatever their party leaders (preists) tell them to.
I think it is quite scary.
I happen to side more with the conservatives but only about 60% of the time.
The sad truth is that people have never thought for themselves. They believe whatever they are told.
Right now anyone reading my answer is saying that they side with their party because they believe more in what they represent.
The word "belief" should have nothing to do with this. Right and wrong exist.
On each issue, one party has a more correct stance.
Neither is right all the time.
The problem is that people no longer see it as a question of right and wrong. It is a question of belief, just like religion.
The world continues to get more and more stupid.

The Democratic Party is near worthless absent some catalyzing event such as an illegal war.
The Republican Party has thrown their platform to the wind in blind support of their President.
Both have become corrupt to nearly the point of organized crime. The Republicans may have surpassed that point, given the scandals of the past six years.
What ever happened to picking a candidate based on his ability to perform the job better, instead of picking one based on whether or not he is electable?
Our current system is broken and corrupt. The only way to fix it is to eliminate all incumbents in each voting cycle.
When the politicians realize that their job, once elected, is not safe barring some sexual scandal or indictment, then they will begin to regain some respect for the citizens that put them in office.
I am all for dissolving all political parties.
If we can do "American Idol" and sort through to get to the one that the viewers think is the best, why can we not do it with political competitions?
Why do we need parties at all?

Stupid idea. They will never allow it. The two nations that scream the most about democracy on this planet are also the ones who's electoral system is designed so no one other than either of the ruling parties will rule the country. So never mind the Republicans/Democrats. Think Labour/Conservative and then look at Britain. And what a sorry state has two party politics brought that country down to. Another 20 years and it'll be worse living here than it was in Spain during the Franco years!

No just stop all funding from outside sources. Donate $3 to political election campaigns on the income tax and let the candidates draw a set amount from that. Pretty soon all of the crooks would leave and we would be left with people that really did want to serve.

I'm for scrapping the parties. Not for adding more. If people supported individual ideas versus blanket ideology, I think it would force politicians to do the same. I think too many people rely on others to tell them what to think.
In my travels when I hear the words relating to Iraq, "fight them over there so we don't have to... blah blah blah", I know that these are thoughtless individuals repeating what they've been told to think.
They all said:
"They worked with Al-Queda..."
"The oil will pay for the war..."
"This will be a piece of cake..."
"We will be greeted as liberators..."
I've traveled the country, coast to coast and border to border for six month assignments. The warmongers from coast to coast were quoting the same words. Which is proof that these words were not of their own, original thought. They were told what to think.

Not a bad idea but the Skull & Bones wouldn't allow it. Which of those four would the Libertarians be in? That's the best party right now.

For god's sake.. if we manage to get rid of parties.. let's not allow any of them to come back, EVER.
Let everybody in Washington fend for themselves and vote their own line, instead of the party one.

Well, I have a pet theory that politicians are proof that aliens exist.
If the democrats and republicans didn't exist then they would be replaced by another load of corrupt officials who may be even more corrupt

What needs to happen is we need to clean up the system we have. If it's not cleaned up we would only end up with corrupt new parties.
