it's a disk (probably a CD now, but in the past was a floppy), which starts up a program, without using the hard drive of the computer.

say you have emptied your entire hard drive and have no programs or operating systems on it, in that scenario you would need a "start up disc" to load the operating system from it, so you can install things.

Every OS (Operating Systems) like DOS, Windows etc. need some system files at the startup. These system files contain relivants configurations which computer need to start without any problem. Basically these are located in system folder and root directory of a oprating system. But sometime when our Harddisk fails then it doesnt allow OS to start the computer.

At the point we need an external disk (may be Floppy Disk, CD drive etc. ) which cotains all relivant and necessary systems file to boot the computer, these disk are Called StartUP Disk.

When u buy a PC/Computer To start it u need a Start UP Disk .
Usually reffered to as Bootable Disk.

Earlier, bootable Disk is Avilable in Floppy.
Now , a Bootable CD/DVD even Bootable USB also available.

Even, to Partition ur Hard Disk also u require it.
