I had an injury the other day to my right hand that left my pinky finger broken. I also noticed the skin was torn back. i noticed today that the skin around the broken area is solid white. Does this mean its an infection or does it mean its healing naturaly?

white? a complete lack of blood flow to the tissue? or it could be just because you had a bandage on it and you just took it off. it'll be white for a few minutes but it'll change soon. if it's not infected yet it will be soon. look for discoloration like redness, swelling, local heat, discharge or draining from the wound, and pain. does it hurt? check to see if the finger, especially the area below the wound is getting circulation. it's critical that you finger gets adequate circulation or the tissue will die and gangrene will set in. a worst case scenario though. pinch your fingernail hard enough to squeeze all the blood out from under it and turn it white, then release it. count the seconds till the color returns. it should take two seconds or less. if it takes longer the finger isn't getting adequate blood circulation.

do you have a fever? if you have a fever even a low-grade fever then it sure is an infection. other signs of infection is redness on the area. solid white i dont really know. because it must be liquid to say there's an infection. anyway see a doc. immobilize it by splinting for a while and wash it with mild soap and water or you can use betadine to clean it. but see a doc.

If you have had a bandage on it since the injury, it means that the wound is not getting any oxygen and has gotten moisture on it. It should be healing normally though. Once the bandage is taken off, normal color will return.

hard to tell, if the area is tender to touch and had gone red it would be infected, it may also be dirty and filled with puss, or it could just be healing naturally, if you have had a plaster over it it will appear white, if you at all really worried i say go the GP as a infection could be bad and need antibiotics to heal it

It sound like a natural heal...just keep it clean and make sure it's not running puss which is a sign of infection.

If the surrounding skin is red and inflamed then your injury is infected. You can also tell if you have an infection in any part of your body by checking out your groin. You will feel a lump on either one or both sides.
