a kx500 or one of the newer 450f's. I would want the kx500 because of the massive horsepower.

I would prefer the 450 cause you would get way better gas mileage and the less pits the better. Also today's newer 450's are not that far below an old 500 2. you'd be surprised if you rode bth back to back. And im guessing since you can't answer this ? for yourself you probably arent going to get anywhere near 100+ so the 450 would be the best choice for you.

the newer 450f's are great in power as well, if you will be doing a desert race, look at the area you will be racing over, does it have high speeds, technical parts, uphills, down hills, sand, rocks....etc.
the kx 500 definatly has a ton of power, but it is faster on the top end, which means more higher speeds. Both are great bikes, but if you are going to race a desert race, and going out to buy a new bike, look at the KTM 525 mxc. that is the best desert bike made.....

Massive hp for 10 kilometres is useless if the race is 11 kilometres long.

well actually the best desert bike made would be to look at which one always dominates the dakar rally which would be any of these ktms 650 RALLY 690 RALLY 660 RALLY but you might have a hard time to find them in north america.
