Most over-the-counter sleep aids contain first-generation anti-histamines (diphenhydramine). These were originally used to treat allergies, and they are the main ingredient in OTC drugs like Benadryl (and this is why Benadryl makes you sleepy).
The fact these drugs are "first-generation" means they are older, and relatively non-selective. They have all sorts of side effects since they act at so many sites in the body. This makes them less than desirable as sleep aids as they cause a "hang over" the next day.
Prescription sleep-aids available include a wide range of benzodiazepines. These include drugs like Valium and Xanax that are sedating, and newer drugs like Ambien and Lunesta, which have less next-day side affects. Tolerance develops to these drugs, which makes them habit forming, but in the short-term or used intermittently, these drugs generally provide good efficacy with few side effects.
Lastly, I have heard individual stories of success with supplements of the hormone melatonin (particularly in dealing with jet-lag). There are questions about the efficacy vs. placebo, but I say, if people find that it works for them, that's great. I believe there are less side effects involved, too, since it is a naturally occuring hormone. Unfortunately, since melatonin is a "supplement" and not regulated by the FDA, quality and content vary greatly from one preparation to another.
Obviously, you should consult your doctor for his advice, and also BEFORE you take ANY medication. You might think a drug or a "supplement" is safe, but it is still a drug, and can be dangerous for some people.
Hope that helps.

There are several medications you can take, but what you need to find out is exactly what is keeping you awake! Ambien is a prescription medication that alot of people take. This medication only helps thoughs who can not sleep because of minor pain or minor depression, though. Vicodin relieves severe pain and if taken onlly during the evening can help you get good sleep. The medication I take for sleep is Seroquel; This helps me get 6-8 hours sleep every night/day. I do not only take this medication for sleep though. I also take this for severe depression and bipolar. I have had sleeping problems for ever. One thing that I have learned by Doctors is; do not take the pill until I get tired. If you take a sleeping medication before you are tired, one of two things can happen. #1 you could wined up sleeping too much (several times during the day and all night long) and this isn't healthy for you. #2 You could ended up addicted to the medication and after six or so months the medicine will not work for you any longer. You need to talk with your Doctor about both of these medications and he should be able to tell you which one would be better. Do not try the over the counter medications, they only work for a couple of days and then either stop working or start making you sick. Talk to your Doctor!!!

All sleep inducing medication is addictive and once you start it you will probably not be able to sleep without it for life, unless you go in for counselling, detoxification etc. The same treatment undergone by drug addicts.
If you want good sleep, try some strenuous exercises that will tire you out before bed, also make sure your bowel movement is good, you have a healthy diet and life style, abstain from coffee and other stimulants and avoid getting stressed up.
Try a bit of Yoga, count chickens whatever... Just dont take sleeping pills.!

You have had a tough year. Your hormones from having the baby are probably completely out of wack still and honestly you should make a trip to the doctors, see what they say. You have understandably felt alone and I do have to put it out there that I think it's crazy that a 23 year old went after a 16 year old but none the less you have to ask. Are you in love with him. Be completely honest, if you are stay and give it a shot, if not than leave it as that and just allow him to be a father to the baby but you guys should split. Good luck.

Over the counter or by prescription? If by prescription, then your Doctor could give you a sleep medication such as ambien. Or something in the benzodiazepine group like ativan or valium.
If you want something over the counter, try unisom, I have found it to work the best. It's so much better than benadryl (the main other antihistamine used for sleep). And unisom won't leave you with a drug hangover the next day.

Persons taking pills for insomnia get addicted to taking them regularly. Over a period of time, they increase their doses to unimaginable levels and still get lesser sleep than normal persons. If one puts more emphasis on his heart rather than to his mind, then one can get good sleep without any medicines. For that one should realize his self through the help of an experienced spiritual teacher and start doing meditation for an hour daily. One should get full relief in one week to three months.

There are all sorts of medication to help you sleep for 6 - 8 hours. If you don't want to go to the doctor because it's not a chronic problem or want to try for a short period of time, you can try Benedryl or the generic version of it. It is what is in most of the pm sleep aids that are otc, like Tylenol pm, it just has benedryl in it to help you sleep.
