I think materialism is everywhere, not just America. The difference is that rich people are seen as idols in America, versus in other countries rich people are just 'rich'. Americans worship individualism. It is okay for anyone to only think about themselves, as long as they achieve something great (which includes getting rich) It is almost as if being 'someone' is the route to getting more relationships with others. But unfortunately in the process of trying to get somewhere, people lost the opportunities and ability to connect. Since Americans come from families that has left where their ancestors had been living for thousands of years to come to the New World, I think their tradition enphasized more on exploring, creating your own path, rather than trying to conform, stay with and take care of extended families. With people not putting priority on families and relationships, it is natural that they will get lonely as they age.

It's possible.People do tend to stereotype others.I have noticed this all my life.People compare instantly looking for someone famous or trying to be themselves instead of just being themselves.Europeans seem to be content with who they are and no worry so much about what everyone thinks.I also believe that our schools should be teaching people about the what it is like in the real world instead of breeding false hope. Then after they get out on their own they go into a state of depression, when they find out it (life) is not instant gratificational.Peace!!.

You really have no idea about Americans do you? We are not isolated... we travel all over the place in and out of America. We have friends spread over this huge country and world. If more depressed than any other country... it would be because we are overworked, none of the lame excuses you can come up with.

yea. i know people who have moved to the U.S. thinking they could get a better life, but its actually worse. the reasons are different for everyone. some may be because of television( everyone they look up to is skinny, but there are so many fast food places that america is the fattest country) for me its the governement. with equal rights and marriage laws.
