a definitely debatable subject-- almost as debatable as what came first the chicken or the egg-- since people where living in North America long before the 1400's I would have to say neither -- the vikings were clearly here and the stone huts predate the vikings -- the indigenous people were here to witness all this but they kept no written history only oral histories were passed down -- so who were the first person to discover North America??? John Cabot is the clear winner given the choice between him and Christopher Columbus. Since Columbus made it to the mainland in 1498 and John Cabot did so in 1497.

Cabot was the first modern man to touch mainland North America. Columbus just stumbled across the new World, on San Salvador.

But Lief Erickson the Viking was said to be the first European to reach North America. The Vikings settled a place called Vinland. It was soon abandoned due to the natives' apparent hostilities towards them.

There was archaeological strong evidence in the 1940s or 1950s that the Vikings (Leif Erickson) arrived in Newfoundland before Cabot or Columbus, in the 11th century or earlier. Leif Erickson's journals called it Vinland.

Although Spoonman's point about early Native Americans crossing the land bridge from Siberia to Alaska is well taken, it is much harder to verify and date.

We have very good evidence that Native Americans were in America long before either Cabot or Columbus. We have good physical evidence putting that discovery at around 12000 years ago, and genetic evidence that possible pushes it back further.

Neither one. Give your teacher this information. Three miles out of Stamford, Connecticut are the ruins of 13 stone huts. Oral tradition of the Stockbridge Indians have told that the huts were there before the indians came from the West. Writings in caves nearby are Ogham, the ancient alphabet of ancient Irish Druids. John Williams and members of America's Epigraphic Society verify that the writings are true Ogham. Do some research, you may surprise your teacher.

Giovanni Caboto (c. 1450 – c.1499), known in English as John Cabot, was a navigator born in Gaeta and explorer one of the first early modern Europe to discover the North American mainland, in 1497.

But he the credit has been given to Columbus.
