Air travel is proven safer than traveling by car. We are taking a 7 hour flight with our 8 month old very soon. Good luck with yours!
Most airlines don't require seats to be purchased for children under age 2 if they are to sit in a parents lap. But please check their policies on empty seats. Most I am finding will allow us to bring his car seat and if there is an empty seat we can use it. Also you may be unaware that even if you do not purchase the baby a ticket, most airlines still allow certain carry-on baggage for the baby. American Airlines in particular I've checked with. They allow car seat, diaper bag and stroller even without purchased ticket. Hope you enjoy your trip!

There is no risk, my son is 7 months old and has already been on two trips that required flying. I do, however, recommend that you bring plenty of patience!!! I was very stressed out by the end of the trip. Also, try to plan your flight during your child's best times during the day. My son is usually in his best mood first thing in the morning. Also, if he takes regular scheduled naps, it might be easier to plan the flight during nap time so he will sleep, but if he is like my son and fights naps, it was better for us that he had a good nap before the flight. Another thing, I know everyone hates long layovers, but they are quite helpful when traveling with a little one. You will need the time to change him (avoid doing it on the plane if at all possible) and feed him. If your layover is long enough, this is also a good time for a nap.
Good luck!!!

Check with your child's doc first. I am military and had no choice with mine, but was instructed to bring some infant Benadril with us on the trip. (Chicago to CA=5 hours). The Benadril knocks them out pretty fast. I am not recommending this without first checking with your doctor first, and consider holding out in case the baby takes to the flight well. Ours held out pretty long, but 2 hours into the flight, it helped to have this on hand. Good luck.

There isn't any risk, I traveled with my daughter when she was four months old. Please, don't give your child any medicine just to get him or her to sleep. Just keep keep her occupied and awake until you get on the plane and have a warm bottle waiting. My daughter slept the whole flight.

i took my daughter on her first trip when she was 4 months old. she loved it! but, when the air pressure changes from takeoff and landing, let him suck on a passifier to help ease the pressure in his ears. before you pack, make a checklist of everything you'll need for your son. and, pack a small bag that you can carry with you on the plane with his toys, snacks, and a small blanket (for cuddling)...be sure to take pictures of the trip too! have fun!
