It depends on your style. I think people like songs they can connect to in their own life, the songs become a way of saying "yes that's exactly how I feel and somebody else does too.", or explaining a certain issue or point in time. Or heck, just a fun song to unwind with. I used to write songs, stories, and poems to help me cope or work through black times in my life. As Anna Nalick sings "these words are my diary written outloud." Write about what your life is like now.
