You'll never find a guy fat enough to cover the ENTIRE goal, and a fat person will typically be slower to react to pucks shot between his legs or to his sides.

first of all its very hard to find a person fat enough to take up an entire hockey net and second of all if there is a person that fat and willing to do it do you really think that he'd have the ability to stand on a pair of ice hockey skates i doubt that very much and also a hockey game isnt 10mins long he'd be standing in the net for at least an hour throughout the whole game 20mins per period and have you ever seen a fat guy that big standing on his feet for that long i dont think so so the answer to your question is b/c its a bad idea no one wants some fat slob in net giving up goals especially when there is some extremly great athletes out there playing goalie in hockey and plus its much more entertaining when a goalie dives across the net and makes a great glove save the only time you'll see a fat guy do that is for a cheese burger ( no offence to fat guys, just stay out of the nets!)

The NHL still limits the equipment size a goalie can wear so a person that was 400 lbs. would not fit into the generic equipment allowed. As well a person this size usually has other health issues and we would see a lot of heart attacks on the ice. The goalie still has to be able to skate and shoot the puck and drop to the knees and get back up quickly and I feel a person over 250lbs would have a very hard time being a good goalie for a pickup league let alone the NHL.

Good question. Really big guys would be to slow in most cases. In reality most goalies are fairly tall and slender. They will give up bulk for being thin to improve their reaction times. Could you imagine seeing a big fat guy trying to get up off his back. I can only think of one "big guy" that was a goalie that had a brief stint with Dallas. Mike Torchia. I use to watch him in junior when he played for the Kitchener Rangers. He was the biggest goalie i had ever seen but he was pretty good. His nickname was Mac Attack...his favorite food was big macs lol. Google him and im sure you can find his junior and pro stats.

Because a "real big fat guy" wouldn't be in good enough shape. Goalie's do more than just stand there and block...ever seen a "really big fat guy" do the splits?! :)

I used to play goalie, and my ex-girlfriend used to ask this same question (which is why she's my ex... just kidding). believe it or not, the "snipers" in hockey are so amazingly accurate with their shots that they can pretty much put it where they want to if there was a stationary target. it takes amazing athleticism, reflexes, and co-ordination to play goalie. some of the best goalies of all time were actually normal size (6'-0", 200lbs. for Patrick Roy) or smaller (5'-9", 165lbs for Mike Vernon). if you put anybody much bigger than that, they would be a liability because they can't move fast enough to be able to stop the puck.

They did, they have put Patrick Roy and Chris Ossgood. The two of them got in a fight one time, Ossgood said to reporters after the game. In a video after the game " The least he can do is pick on guys his own size," Ossgood said.
If there are too large of goalies in the net they would be to slow, with all their bulk.

Someone asked the same question a week and a half ago. Fat guys are not usually athletes. (Sumo Wrestlers maybe) No fat people are quick enough, athletic enough nor have enough stamina to compete in goal. They are not big enough to cover a 6 ft wide net.

Thats a good question - you would think they would be hot to hire a sumo wrestler as a goalie.
