Mathematics is the body of knowledge centered on concepts such as quantity, structure, space, and change, and also the academic discipline which studies them.
the above would be the Wikipedia definition of mathematics, which as you may see broadens mathematics in most every sense.
I may well be biased but I take mathematics to be more philosophical, with greater abstraction and the applications are wonderful but only upto the point when neccessity threatens to overrule curiosity.
Maths is the study of quantity, structure, space and change. It developed, through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, from counting, calculation, measurement, and the study of the shapes and motions of
mathematics: a science (or group of related sciences) dealing with the logic of quantity and shape and arrangement
physical objects.

Math helps with rhythm, counting, and keeping a steady tempo. Accoustics involves a LOT of math, mostly calculus. For example, if you were a violin maker, you have to make sure the measurements and everything are exact when you're making the violin, so the sound waves bounce around at the right speed and distance.

Well, it gives you some short cut mantras to perform processes like long division, complex multiplication, finding square roots, cube roots, etc, etc.
You'd see that all of these things were contemplated by Indian scholars. That means Indians actually knew how to deal with these sort of mathematical problems in a better way.
It relevance you ask; I think you are thought this in some way or the other for appearing for entrance tests, mba admissions, etc. It is sadly as far as to that extent however...

I doubt if it's very important. I have a BS in engineering-math and am currently working on an MS in math and I've never heard of it.
