I vote for Valencia.
Valencia is a fast growing City (the 3rd largest in Spain) with nice places to see and go. If you like the beaches you can go to Malvarrosa and see the America's Cup Sailboat competition, this year in Valencia. Don't miss La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, a modern Acropolis designed by Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela. The biggest and more modern aquarium in Spain is there. You can also go to the Imax theater, is and incredible eye shape building surrounded by pools.
The old city is also interesting where you can go to El Mercado (the biggest in Spain), the Cathedral and the Minaret. The IVAM modern museum is a another good place to go.
Last year I travel a 3 weeks in Spain and I really like Valencia.

Marbella is a great place to be in the summer, although I am not sure if you will get much studying done! The beach there is excellent, the shops very good and the nightlife superb.
It is a very clean and pretty town totally, geared for its visitors and I am sure you will hae a good time there.

Have you considered Alcala de Heneres? It is close to Madrid, a great university and a really nice city itself. Cervantes went there.
